DIY Lawn Care
Do it yourself lawn care starts with testing the soil. It's important to test your soil resulting in a neutral pH which is about 6.5 on the pH tester. By understanding the status of your soil, will then determine how to start treating and maintaining your lawn. This will also help you decide on what kind of fertilizer you purchase for your yard.
Once your soil has been tested, you can go ahead and mow your lawn. Mowing your lawn will allow your soil to breathe and trim all substances that are not needed. As a result, you will then have a nice trimmed lawn, being it's your ultimate goal.
Start a 4-6 week chemical schedule for your lawn. You want to start this process in early spring, maybe the first week of April. The chemical treatment will get rid of the weeds that are already in your lawn, hindering the grass to grow. This will all be in preparation of having a healthy lawn in the long run. Apply the fertilizer that has a pre-emergent herbicide, and then a fertilizer that is a weed preventer.
Then water your lawn regularly, about every five days. You want to make sure that you add at least an inch of water per week. After these important steps you should have a lovely lawn that you can be proud of.
When grass cutting, make sure that you're not over cutting your lawn. Studies have shown that having about 2 to 2 1/2 inches is best for a strong lawn. When you mow your lawn to low, you may bring the opportunity for weeds to grow. Another reason for a taller grass length, is to hold more water which will keep the roots from drying. Another great tip is to use an organic fertilizer instead of a fertilizer with insecticide. These regular fertilizer with insecticide kill all pests including the ones that are needed in your lawn. Next time you are out shopping for a fertilizer, pay attention to the details, and go with an organic fertilizer instead.
The Anatomy of Grass
Before lawn mowing, why not understand what grass is all about? Knowing the anatomy of grass and how it grows, will provide you with the knowledge necessary to care for a healthy lawn. Grass grows originally through a seed as most plants do. Just like other plants, grass has roots where it feeds through and receives its nutrition. The roots include extensions called Stolons, which are grown parallel to the ground. Stolons help grass grow in other areas without the need of seeds. Roots shoot out from a very important part of the grass called culms. The actual grass leaf is actually composed of two parts. The first part is called the sheath, which is an empty tube. From the sheath, the blade (also known as the leaf) extends and grows from it. The last component is important to spread more grass, by dropping new seeds, and this is called florets.
Now that you understand the anatomy of grass, you can’t forget about what grass needs to stay strong and healthy. Nutrients are given to grass through soil, and the soil will have a huge impact on your lawn. The next crucial step is to water your grass, especially when its fairly young. The water is important for the roots of the grass to grow, impacted by the soil moisture. Last but not least, sunlight will determine if your grass will grow or not. In combination with the right amount of water, and a healthy soil, sunlight will be responsible for the color of the green grass. If your grass changes in color, then one of these factors are lacking for its health. Once you have learned the anatomy of grass, followed what was mentioned earlier, you will be able to grow a super green lawn. You have the lawn that you have dreamed of, and all that is left is regular lawn care maintenance.
